Misfits continues its esports journey by launching a gaming studio

Misfits Gaming Ventures is expanding its strategy away from esports and focusing on game development with the launch of Misfits Interactive. While details about the new game studio’s projects have not been revealed, the team plans to develop an entirely new IP on existing UGC platforms.

“As we embark on this ambitious journey, our mission at Misfits is once again focused on: elevating gaming by creating unparalleled, immersive gaming experiences that resonate far beyond the screen and speak directly to the hearts of gamers everywhere,” said Ben Spoont, CEO of Misfits Gaming. “We call it ‘POWERED BY PLAY,’ and it captures our core belief in the unifying and inspiring power of games.”

Misfits Interactive’s launch coincides with the anniversary of the group’s launch of its creator-led Roblox studio, Pixel Playground. Since launching a year ago, the Roblox studio, co-founded by Misfits, Karl Jacobs and Kreekcraft, has amassed over 250 million views on the platform. Additionally, the company sold out three live shows across the United States, promoting the talents and games of its creators.

We give creators a voice in the game creation process

Misfits has named Chris Casanova as head of Interactive, leading the former esports team’s new studio. Before joining Misfits in 2023, Casanova worked at multiple triple-A studios, including Xbox, Mojang, and Sega. In addition to Casanova, Misfits Interactive has over 20 developers working on both UGC experiences and original games.

“Which really struck me [joining Misfits] Is it possible to build a team and manage it in a revolutionary way both for the organization and the industry itself? I can take what I’ve learned from some of the biggest players in the industry and build a team that can make games they love as quickly as possible. I think I can leave a legacy here,” Casanova said.

Misfits Interactive will provide the team’s talent with more opportunities to build their brand through their games. Casanova told GamesBeat that one of the reasons he joined was the degree to which Misfits integrates its communities and creators into the game design process.

For now, the team plans to focus on creating more experiences for UGC platforms – Roblox and Minecraft in particular – and improving them with triple-A acumen. The team hopes to create experiences that will appeal to fans as they grow older.

“What’s been really amazing about the Misfits journey is getting started in esports, it’s been amazing for the organization. They were successful and learned a lot about the gaming industry. Our CEO Ben [Spoont] he was amazing at navigating rough waters,” Casanova said. “We truly believe that we can spark joy and connection through the magic of play. We are truly excited to create games in our unique way, with input from our community, influencers and potential brand partners.”

Misfits Interactive is currently working on two games to be released this summer, with more to be released later.
